Summer in San Francisco often feels like November anywhere else. When the marine layer rolls in, older apartments with single-pane windows lose heat fast. A few small upgrades make a big difference.
1. Warm the person, not the whole flat
Heating a whole Victorian is expensive. A compact ceramic heater by your desk or bed warms the space you're actually in. Look for tip-over and overheat protection, and keep it at least three feet from curtains and bedding.
2. Layer your bed for real sleep
Breathable cotton sheets keep you from overheating under heavy blankets, and a 15 lb weighted blanket adds warmth plus that calm, tucked-in feeling. It's the cheapest way to make a cold room feel cozy.
Better tip: run a heater for 20 minutes before bed, then switch it off and let your bedding hold the warmth. You'll sleep better and save on power.
3. Stop the drafts
- Roll a towel along the bottom of the front door.
- Close blinds as soon as the sun drops behind the fog.
- Move your bed or couch a few inches away from outside walls.
4. Keep the air dry
Damp air feels colder. Crack a window for ten minutes after showers and cooking, and wipe condensation off the glass in the morning to keep mildew away.
